While most were asleep at midnight Wednesday, two Lake Martin area students were beginning an 8-hour drive to the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., to make a special delivery.

Auburn University seniors Cary Farrington of Dadeville and Ryan Hill of Alexander City were responsible for carrying a 4-foot by 8-foot sheet of plywood with up to 3,000 signatures, including interim president Ed Richardson.

The two seniors drove eight straight hours to Blacksburg to deliver and help put the sign up along with six or seven other signs in a makeshift memorial on the drill fields of Virginia Tech.

"Everyone there thought it was pretty cool," Farrington said. "They couldn't believe we drove all the way from Auburn."

There aren't any known immediate ties between Auburn and Virginia Tech, except for the fact the two universities' football teams met in the 2005 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

The sign, which reads "We stand with you in Prayer," was the first from another university to be erected in the memorial area of the drill fields, according to Farrington.

Farrington said he didn't talk to many students on campus, because there weren't that many on campus Wednesday morning.

"It was really surreal," Farrington said. "We didn't get to talk to a lot of the students except those in [the student government association]. But you can tell the general consensus is that it hasn't hit home just yet. They are still in shock."
